‘Joy of Teen Sex’ returns tomorrow

Channel 4’s explicit ‘Joy of Teen Sex’ programme returns tomorrow
- Thursday 27 October at 10pm

We’re forwarding this message to you from our friends in Safer Media.

As some of you will remember, the first series of ‘Joy of Teen Sex’, shown in January / February this year, caused a great deal of controversy and alarm and was widely thought to be harmful to young people by both the public and by healthcare professionals (see more details at the end of this message). Sadly Ofcom did not uphold the “considerable number” of complaints, and Safer Media are still following this up.

We would be very grateful if you were able to watch at least one episode of ‘Joy of Teen Sex’ which is on for 6 weeks. You don’t have to watch the whole thing to comment, and it is now easier to contact the regulators than ever before: Go to the new website – www.parentport.org.uk - a one-stop shop where parents and anyone concerned about children, can lodge a formal complaint with Ofcom and ALSO post general comments by clicking on ‘Have your say’. This is important because statistics will be drawn from this feedback, and other people will be able to read your comments.

Thank you.

Some comments on the ‘Joy of Teen Sex’ series earlier this year:

23 healthcare professionals told Ofcom: ” …sexual and reproductive healthcare and education has been grossly misrepresented, leading to parents feeling anxious, young people’s right to accurate information not being delivered, and professional advice being ignored at all stages of programme development.”

Safermedia wrote to Ofcom: “The teenagers are encouraged to ‘improve their sex lives’ with exceptionally detailed advice on oral and anal sex, genital plastic surgery and genital piercing… S&M, sex toys, ‘sex-enhancing’ drugs and working in the sex industry. Young people do not benefit from this sort of information, quite the opposite in fact. By neglecting to discourage risky promiscuous sex, C4 is tacitly encouraging it, because the power of television imagery normalises the behaviour shown … It disinhibits, seriously undermines a healthy sense of modesty and virtue and can drive a wedge between generations by undermining parents’ guidance.”

I haven’t watched the “Joy of Teenage sex” but have read the many comments and detailed info on what has been included in the programmes and feel dismayed that it is on again. As a counsellor who counsels many young people and parents, I can tell people that our youth are being seriously damaged, emotionally, sexually and in the way they view themselves and others by the constant stream of sexual imagery and disinformation about sexuality. We see many youngsters who have passed sexual images of themsleves to others and are now being bullied because of it or have had rapes or assualt videoed on phones and shared around. The consequence is depression, self harming and suicidal attempts. This is just one example of the reality of such sexualisiation by media output which then has the nerve to say it is being educational- what rubbish.
The packeges available in youth centre, GP surgeries and outpatients offering free test kits for Chlamydia are part of the testimony to the damage we are doing,
    God help this nation

As the Mother of a teenager, I am appalled at this programme and the dross it brings to our culture of teens. As parents we try to instil values, morals to our children, at the same time the media confronts them with an avalanche of degradation, sexual deviancy which is deemed normal when it is anything but. The people who write these programmes and the people responsible for airing them and allowing them are equally responsible for the effects on all our children. The sheer debauchery taking place on our airways comes at a very high price. I would like to see the day when these very people are taken to the High courts and tried for being the perpetrators of crimes against innocence; for being responsible for causing the unwanted babies, the suicidal teenagers and the rampant sexual diseases amongst teenagers. God help this nation is right.

I absolutely agree with the first comment. I watched the first part and a bit of the second and was shocked and horrified by what I saw. I can’t see that any good will come out of putting this programme on for 6 wweeks. The first is enough. As was said “God help our Nation”. It’s nothing more than sodomy and there will be serious repercussions especially for the BBC and OFCOM. Sex should be explored not exploited. Let it be in the context of marriage not licence.

How many complaints did Ofcom actually receive?
