ask your MP to
“please forward this to the minister responsible and I look forward to their response”

This simple addition to emails and letters will make them much more effective

Reasons why:
It makes it harder for the MP to just ignore the letter as the request is to pass it on
The MP or their PA needs to find out who the minister responsible is making them think more about your letter
The Minister as well as your MP has to reply to your letter.
when the MP gets the response they need to read it and most likely reread your original letter as well
Your MP then should also add their comment to the response to cover themselves that the ministers response answers your point correctly as it would look bad on them if an inappropriate response was to be passed on to the local press.

i) The motion itself – whether to redefine marriage

ii) What is called the “programme motion” – in essence the timetable for moving the motion forward.

If the programme motion is defeated the effect being that the debate can be lost because there becomes no time limit for debate, and eventually it could be given up in order not to become a blockage to parliamentary business.

This is what happened to the debate around Lord’s reform. The motion itself was passed, but the programme motion was defeated, so in the end the motion was lost.

There is a possibility that, although the motion itself (redefinition of marriage) would likely be voted for, the programme motion might well be defeated. This situation could then be that the motion would be lost.

A disturbing political manoeuvre on the government’s part.

It appears that David Cameron is looking very seriously at calling a 3-line whip on the vote regarding the programme motion, such a move would effectively take away the right of MP’s to a totally free vote on the issue.

It would appear to be designed to try to force this issue through, and flies in the face of what has so far been promised around MP’s being able to vote according to conscience.

There is a need for MP’s to know that people on the ground have an understanding of the political process, and to know that when something unacceptable is planned that it is met with robust opposition.

So………

Please take this up with your MP. Perhaps ask them to confirm their understanding of what is being planned, and express serious concern should there even be the prospect of a whipped vote on the programme motion. It wouldn’t hurt to point out that they would themselves be stripped of influence should this happen.

Please also enlist the support/advice of others you may know who have an understanding of/influence over, political issues such as these.
We need to bring pressure to bear on MP’s.

And of course – PRAY! Pray against the proposals, pray against inappropriate and unacceptable wrangling. But pray also that the LORD would uphold and strengthen those who are taking a stand – may they and their efforts prosper.

Please take what action you can – both spiritual and practical.
